To
think of the term abyss one may reflect
upon the idea of being wicked with
darkness.
Well, Derrick "Abyss" Graham
brings about spoken word with a deep,
dark message that is delivered with the wittiness of his tongue.
The Detroit native is able to expound upon his life's experiences (be it
good or bad-yet true) through a detailed poetic illustration. The words that
he spits are his depictions of common everyday life-with a little flava.
Abyss
travels in life includes eight years
of service in the United
States Navy. While serving the seas of Uncle Sam, he dreamed of being able
to display his lyrical performance by way of radio, television or whatever
the necessary medium his persona would allow.
With that drive and determination, Abyss put his pen to paper and began noting
his lyrical knowledge while living in the Jacksonville, Florida area where
he was introduced to spoken word by the Positive Third Entertainment Group.
Abyss was able to drop some knowledge and begin a fan base; however, he understood
that in order to cone his craft relocation was inevitable.
Hotlanta
anyone? Yes! Atlanta is
where Abyss was able to develop and
mold his stage presence. Abyss was
more or less one of the pioneers for
spoken word for he proved that there
is a market for this art and validated
his point by continuing to write, display
ideas and take the initiative to scout
different avenues for potential growth.
Now that I have your attention, understand this:
Abyss'
poetry is real.
It is also easy to hear and understand. He writes from the heart and soul
of a man in tune with his inner self. Writing is a reprieve from the ills
of the world that is ultimately responsible for his craft. It is his belief
that only the strong survives-everyone does not make it.
After
reading some of his scribes know that
it can possibly help
somebody who is looking and listening for something or someone to relate
to the (their) struggle. Abyss is a hit on stage because he hits your mind,
body, and soul with a powerful message. That is why the name Abyss (it gets
deep) is so fitting. Life does get deep and Abyss can use his lyrical tongue
to make those elements of darkness bring about light.
